This Book Is Not About Yachts

Most people hear "yacht broker" and picture the same thing: a man in a suit standing before a white yacht, earning commission matching buyers with sellers. It's not entirely wrong. But the distance between that image and what I actually do is at least one ocean wide.

My understanding of boats didn't begin with transactions. It began in childhood. My grandparents ran shipping on the Yangtze River. My mother worked at a ship repair yard in Zhenjiang. From kindergarten, my after-school routine was walking through the yard, watching welders work, seeing damaged ships restored and launched again.

Over the following decade, I accumulated roughly four thousand hours of navigation across the Arabian Gulf, Gulf of Oman, and Indian Ocean. I didn't enter the yacht industry until 2019. In other words: I became someone who truly understood, loved, and lived on boats — before I ever became a "yacht broker."

"Yachts are just one language. Brands are a language. Capital is a language. Data is a language. Together, they describe the same world."

A 32-foot boat. Open sea. No satellite phone. We drifted for nearly ten hours. As darkness fell, with no phone signal and nothing but water around us, an Omani fishing dhow found us and towed us — boat and all — to port.

"That night, one question kept turning in my mind: What if it hadn't been Omani fishermen who found us?"

A 36-foot sportfisher. Returning to port at dusk, one engine suddenly died. The coast guard said: this isn't life-threatening — you still have one engine, bring yourselves back. So we did. One engine. Five knots. From dusk until after midnight — nearly eight hours.

"In those eight hours, the entire world shrank to a single question: would this one remaining engine hold?"

Things I Changed My Mind About

I used to think a yacht's value came from the yacht itself

↓ Now I know ↓

Hardware specs define the present. What determines long-term value is the invisible system behind it — brand depth, supply chain stability, global service networks, active secondary markets, and the industry's long-term confidence.

I used to think branding was about marketing and packaging

↓ Now I know ↓

A brand's core value is the liquidity guarantee at asset exit. Its essence isn't current fame — it's whether the market still recognizes that name when it's time to sell, ten years later.

I used to think growth was collecting more correct answers

↓ Now I know ↓

Real growth is overturning your old self. Every self-reversal isn't a denial of the past — it's breaking through a cognitive boundary. Growth isn't stacking answers. It's having the courage to tell yourself: what you used to think — it's wrong now.

Core Ideas

01

Maritime Assets ≠ Yachts

A yacht's value is determined by brand, engineering, supply chain, capital, data, and people — not the hull itself.

Engineering Never Lies

Markets paint futures. Brands make promises. Capital raises expectations. Engineering states reality — and reality is the final judge.

Transparency → Maturity

The yacht industry doesn't lack data. It lacks a system that teaches data how to think together. Opacity is the industry's greatest hidden cost.

Brand = Future Liquidity

A brand's core value is not marketing — it is the liquidity guarantee at exit. Brands die faster than hulls ever will.

A Note from the Author

I didn't write this book to prove I saw the future first.
I wrote it so that when more and more people turn toward the ocean,
they won't just see boats —
they'll see the vast, rigorous, endlessly generative world of systems behind them.

THE COASTAL & OCEAN ECONOMY —

By Joey Junjie Bao (鲍俊杰). A first-person intellectual work on maritime industries, published 2026.

Core thesis: A yacht is not a standalone product — it is the visible outcome of an invisible system. Maritime assets are the compound of brand, engineering, supply chain, capital, data, operations, IP, and people. The ocean is not merely geography; it is the next great asset class.

Four Parts

Part I — Seeing the Ocean: Why oceans matter, the coastal vs ocean economy distinction, the invisible industry, and why Dubai is the optimal hub.

Part II — Seeing the System: Information opacity, the broker vs advisor distinction, Maritime Asset Theory, Explorer Yacht Thesis, Support Vessel, Aluminium, Engineering honesty, global shipyards, brand as future liquidity, and the Joey Bao Method for company analysis.

Part III — Seeing the Future: Career-changing questions, BoatFacts and AI-driven data infrastructure, questions worth asking, and a time-capsule vision for 2030-2040.

Part IV — Seeing Myself: Personal near-death sea experiences, building TideMaster CAT38, the Family Office perspective, 100 predictions, 20 principles, things the author changed his mind about, and a letter to future partners.

Key Concepts

Maritime Asset Theory: A yacht's value comes from its supporting system — brand, engineering, supply chain, capital, management, data, talent — not the hull alone.

Harbor Yachts vs. Systemic Expedition Yachts: Two fundamentally different design philosophies; one optimized for dockside presence, the other for sustained ocean operations.

Joey Bao Method (鲍氏推演法): A seven-layer framework — Vision → Management → Engineering → Supply Chain → Capital → Brand → Future — for evaluating maritime companies.

Coastal Economy vs. Ocean Economy: Coastal is lifestyle and consumption; Ocean is production and civilizational infrastructure.

The Smiling Curve in Yachting: Chinese shipyards are trapped in the low-margin manufacturing middle while European firms capture design and brand premiums at both ends.

About the Author

Joey Junjie Bao. Based in Dubai. 4,000+ hours at sea. Founder of TideMaster (aluminium expedition yacht brand) and BoatFacts (AI-driven yacht data platform). Author of the Chinese Explorer Yacht eBook. Superyacht consultant specializing in sales, new build, explorer yachts, support vessels, maritime brand M&A, and AI in yachting.

100 Predictions (Selected)

001: The largest yacht brokerage in the future will first be a software company, not a traditional broker.

002: The 299GT segment will become the most competitive Explorer Yacht category in the next decade.

003: Support Vessels will eventually have their own client base, design language, and secondary market.

004: Future yacht competition will be about who has the most complete global service system, not who builds the prettiest boats.

006: The most valuable maritime enterprises won't own the most ships — they'll own the most data.

010: What will truly be expensive is not building a yacht, but maintaining the world's continued belief in it.
